Meditation is often overlooked as something that only spiritual guru's are accustomed to doing. This is not true, in fact everybody meditates, any time you find yourself in deep concentration this in fact is meditation.
Meditation is a state of mind similiar to day dreaming, it is valuable in the sense that your brain often needs a break from itself. What I mean by this is easy, your mind is accustomed to processing millions of random thoughts a day, when people do nothing to clear the clutter they often times will complain of anxiety and depression. Also common symptoms of sleep deprivation. You see meditation works the same way that sleep does, it gives your mind a break, giving it time to process information and slow down to a good efficient level of productivity
Now that we have discussed why meditation is good, lets talk about how exactly one would begin meditating. Meditation in its simplist form is quite easy to accomplish.
First step: Find a quiet room in which no one will bother you. Make yourself as comfortable as possible, sit down with your back straight and your hands on your knee's. If leaning against a wall is easier for you then do this. Make sure that the room is at a comfortable temperature, you are going to want to have as little distraction as possible.
Second step: Begin by imagining a small red dot in the spot that your eyes meet. Picture the dot is about 6 inches away from your face, concentrate with all of your energy on only focusing on the dot. Do not let your mind drift, it is important to clear your head of all thoughts at this stage. Only concentrate on the imaginary dot. Simple enough. This step may take 5 minuts or 30 minuts depending on how disciplined your brain is, some people have more trouble concentrating on something so simple as a dot than others would. This is the step in which you attempt to clear your mind and refresh your thoughts. Do not get discouraged if you find that it is a difficult task to focus all of your attention on the dot, it is an exercese, just like running, it will eventually begin easier.
Third step: This step comes instantaniously after step 2, there should not be a break or rest period in between. Once your mind is cleared of clutter and useless thoughts(the dot exercise will do this) you can begin searching your mind for the answers to the questions in the back of your head. This will come naturally once you have achieved a full meditative state, induced by the dot exercise. If you find that your mind is drifting off spontaneously into thought after thought in a very randomized manner, than you are in the right state of mind. Focus your thoughts and try and stick with them, keep them in your head and concentrate. If you begin to drift into unpleasant thoughts quickly gain control of the situation, shift your consciousness to something else, maybe a good memory or goal you have for yourself, this should overwhelm the unpleasant thoughts and push you in the right direction. Then just see where your mind takes you and enjoy the ride.
Fourth step: Keep up the meditating, set a goal to meditate once every other day or once a day before going to bed. This will keep your mind feeling fresh, healthy and rejuvinated. Meditation is one of the sadest things to not embrace, it can help one true inner peace, I know that meditation has truly helped me overcome many of my past difficulties.
Once you learn to meditate in an atmosphere dedicated to meditation, you will find that with practice you can meditate through most of your daily chores. You will find that meditating is a perfect cure for boredom, one who can utilize every moment by meditating will never again have a wasted moment.
